This ferronickel is a fundamental input in the production of stainless steel, imparting desirable properties such as corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and ductility. SNNC’s facility uses a rotary kiln — electric furnace (RKEF) smelting process to reduce and refine nickel ore into ferronickel.
In their smelter, nickel ore (typically laterite with low Ni content) is dried, pre-reduced in rotary kilns, and then fed into a high-power electric furnace (94 MW/120 MVA) where reduction and melting produce a metallic nickel-iron melt and a slag byproduct.
SNNC’s ferronickel product is sold to downstream steel manufacturers (notably POSCO) as feedstock for stainless and specialty steels.
Additionally, SNNC is evolving to diversify product lines: having historically produced ferronickel, the company is expanding into nickel matte production to serve battery / EV markets. By 2024, SNNC plans to produce 26,000 tonnes of ferronickel and 21,000 tonnes of matte.
