The DIY Cerna® microscope bodies are the core structural components of Thorlabs’ modular imaging platform, enabling researchers to design and build customized microscopes tailored to their experimental needs.
Rail Heights: Available in 350 mm, 400 mm, 500 mm, and 600 mm, providing flexibility in vertical working space.
Epi-Illumination Arm: Models with arms feature a female D1N dovetail at a 7.74" throat depth, supporting widefield viewing and epi-illumination modules. Versions without arms (e.g., CFB1500) allow extra clearance for tall optical assemblies.
Dovetail Interfaces: Each body includes 95 mm linear dovetail rails for attaching microscope modules, ensuring stable alignment and vibration damping.
Mounting Base: Pre-installed bases with imperial and metric counterbores allow secure integration with optical tables. Bases can be replaced with the MMP2XY translator, enabling 2" motorized XY translation of the entire microscope body.
Compatibility: Designed to integrate seamlessly with Thorlabs’ objective mounts, condensers, widefield viewing modules, sample holders, and cage systems, supporting imaging techniques such as fluorescence, confocal, Dodt contrast, DIC, brightfield, and darkfield microscopy.
Key Benefits:
🧩 Modularity: Build fully customized microscopes with interchangeable modules.
⚙️ Precision: Machined for perpendicularity and long-term stability.
🔬 Flexibility: Supports both epi-illumination and trans-illumination setups.
📈 Scalability: Expandable with dovetail adapters, cage systems, and optomechanical components.
By combining robust mechanical design with optical compatibility, Thorlabs’ DIY Cerna microscope bodies empower researchers to create tailored imaging systems for advanced biological and physical sciences.
